Since 2002 we have served more than 500 homeowners with home repair, modifications and supplies, ranging from exterior painting and beautification, to weatherization, handyman work, roof replacement and more. Our vision is for every family in Central Florida to have a safe, and healthy home.
We believe that being a good neighbor means ensuring that everyone has a safe and healthy place to call home. We empower communities to make positive, long lasting change.
Rebuilding Together of Central Florida provides free critical home repairs through our Safe and Healthy Housing Program to our neighbors in need. Read on for more information about what we offer.
Safe At Home
Central Florida’s housing affordability issues have captured the attention of the country. There are only 13 affordable housing units for every 100 people who need them. The preservation of owner-occupied affordable housing has never been more important. By repairing homes for seniors and the disabled and helping folks age in place, we are preventing the displacement of our community’s most vulnerable populations who would otherwise not be able to afford to live in our community. Using the Safe at Home standards developed by Rebuilding Together’s national office and leading health, aging and accessibility partners, RTCF provides repairs tailored to the individual needs of our senior and disabled homeowners.
Aging in Place & Accessibility Modifications This program allows homeowners to age gracefully in their home. Repairs include installation of grab bars in the bathroom, replacement of tub with a walk-in shower, repair or installation of a ramp, lowering shelves, restore lighting to all areas of the home, and more. Many of our homeowners are ill or disabled. Home repairs include widening doorways, replacing kitchen counters and appliances with ADA compliant items, installing handrails more.
Weatherization & Energy Efficiency
Its no secret that Florida is hot and muggy. Humid temperatures and rain can quickly escalate to mold inside the home. Homeowners with high utility bills tend to run their air conditioning less, or not at all in effort to reduce their expenses, causing indoor air quality and health problems for the family who lives there. RTCF prioritizes repairs that address the immediate needs of the family, as well as the root cause. RTCF focuses on indoor air quality, such as mold remediation, professional cleaning of home and belongings, and energy efficient repairs like roof replacement, window replacement, caulking, HVAC repair or replacement.
Critical Home Repair
When our community struggles to maintain their home, health and safety is at risk. Our Critical Home Repair program aims to address the most urgent needs impacting the well being of the homeowner and family who resides there. Using a 25 point checklist designed using the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s standards for a Safe and Healthy home, RTCF staff walk through the home with the homeowner to assess every need of the home. Repairs might include replacing breaker boxes to restore power to all parts of home, repairing leaky roofs, broken flooring, adding street numbers to a well light mailbox and home so that emergency services can respond to a call for help, installing handrails for staircases, replace broken door knobs and handles, or replacing broken smoke detectors.
We are a strong advocate for affordable housing and believe its more important than ever to preserve the affordable homes families already live in.
Homeownership does not come with a manual.
Along with our critical home repair programs, RTCF is developing homeowner education programs. Through classes and workshops, homeowners will be taught the in and outs of what it means to be a homeowner, and how to overcome the obstacles of homeownership. Our education program will offer a large curriculum on common homeowner issues and topics such as how to identify a licensed and insured contractor, do-it-yourself home repairs, how to find the best homeowners insurance, and more.
